Once upon a time….. (It seems all the best stories begin that way). Ours certainly did, once upon a time. The founding father of the Mighty Ray Gun was the one and only Tim Daniels. A fully fledged British eccentric, Tim (Danny) Daniels spent the bulk of his life travelling the world. Working in the far flung corners of the globe developing his own unique brand of odd. An aversion to socks, a total commitment to function over form and a deep seated love of capturing images was all he had to fall back on when the world dealt him a cruel hand.
In search of focus we ganged up and used an old domain name to set ‘Our Dan’ on the road to income by taking pictures of mountain bikers at events. One thing lead to another and the pictures got better and better. The rumours of a complete nutter climbing hills and snapping bikers got round. The madness was infectious, a brand was born and the Mighty Ray Gun lived. Well in excess of 2 million visits were made to the web page over its published time and Tim was a recognised figure around the country.
Sadly in 2013 Tim died. Suddenly. Very Suddenly in fact. Leading those who knew him to marvel at the mans ability to shock and surprise and his determination to keep people on their toes. At only 64 his journey was at an end. Trouble was neither the other MRG’ers, or the plentiful followers of the gang were quite ready to call it a day.
Over the following year we considered what and how to move forward with the brand and the story. The photography was gone but the spirit isn’t. In fact more than ever a feeling that being a natural or a member of the gifted few isn’t the only thing worthy of publishing. That ownership doesn’t result in the right to do or even automatic achievement.
The MRG online magazine rose like a phoenix from the flames of the MRG, an idea that won’t die. Its taken various forms and will continue to evolve, paper publishing, e-zine, back of a fag packet its a simple concept. Lets keep things real. Lets not waste our lives hankering for the impossible. Lets take the opportunities we have, grab them by the scruff of the neck and wring every last ounce out of them. If your young or old, good or bad, fast or slow, you can surprise yourself. If you share your goals, no matter how simple they may be for some they will, and do, support you. They will be moved and motivated. They will benefit and reciprocate your success.
Its a message that we all forget from time to time. When life is tough, the bills need paying, the kids need feeding, the roof is leaking, its sometimes hard to remember how darn good it is to be here. To support this the MRG is proud to support Chicks, a charity focused on supporting children who live in tough circumstances. Simply because it supports Dan’s message. Where you start and what you have doesn’t define you.If you can’t do something and you want to: keep trying. Most importantly share. Share ideas, share skills, share money, share enthusiasm, share time.
Don’t watch, do.
Make. Reality. Great.
