School holidays, kids’n’bikes
When I was a kid my bike was everything in the school holidays! If I wasn’t jumping over my mates off a dodgy ramp made from bricks and wood, I was using it to explore the countryside surrounding my family home….
Nothing much has changed really! It was only a few months ago that I was on the receiving end of being jumped over by our friendly EVOLVEMTB coach Tony Williams! And I’m still finding new spots in that same surrounding countryside.
There are two big differences now that I’m a grown up though…. I have a van to take me to new places with my bike, and I have two kids of my own to play bikes with!
It’s half term here in the West Country so it’s that time where as parents we are torn between two options:
1. wanting to sell our children to the black market as they drive us batty,
2. Spoil them rotten with day trips and ‘treats’ to keep them occupied, hopefully avoiding actually exploring option 1!
I choose option 2!
Today i took Isaac and his best bud to Ashton Court, home of the http://www.pedalprogression.com/ team. It was a proper lads morning out. Fully kitted up we rode round the trail, taking as many opportunities as possible to stop for a drink and some Maoam
… any MTB’er will understand that having some form of jellied sweets when out riding a bike is mandatory!
Any innocent bystanders close enough would’ve heard the screaming and whooping….. and the kids were loving it too! But then it went up hill lol…
Kids bikes, with little legs makes for a tough old time riding up hill, but both of them soldiered on, with surprisingly good banter! “Come on slow coach” …. #Why do you keep stopping, shall I go first?!”
I could see my bike mates and me in their friendship and playful, competitive ‘bants’
As always, the ride ended with a chillax at the Cafe in Ashton Court. Along with the good company, coffee and a portion of chips, what more could you ask for on a half term holiday day!
